Year Two Book Week Parade

Dear parents and carers,

Today we had a parade to celebrate Book Week. Everyone came to school dressed up as characters from books. Each grade had a turn to strut down the catwalk and display their creative costumes.

In our writing session, we could choose a character we were dressed up as or another character to describe the inside and outside traits using adjectives. Here are a few examples of our work:

We also created a graph of the different types of costumes including fairy tale characters, superheroes, horror characters and realistic characters. We interpreted the data to find out which costumes were most popular and so on.

Thank you everyone for participating in Book Week. Also thank you to all the families for helping to create and organise some fantastic costumes! We wouldn’t have had so much fun without your help.

The Maths Super Hero Challenge!

Good Afternoon Parents and Carers!

Over the next two weeks our students will be participating in the Maths Superhero Challenge created by Manga High.  Students can earn points for our school by completing any activities whether it may be, Games or Prodigi tasks. Students who demonstrate mastery earn medallions and each medal is worth a certain number of points.

We are encouraging students to complete activities and games over the next two weeks, to not only work towards participating in the challenge, but to built upon their maths knowledge.

We look forward to seeing what we can do over the next two weeks.

Best of luck to all who are participating.

Miss Alebakis

YEAR 2’S GOING CRAZY FOR WORD MANIA!

Hello Everyone!

As you know the last few weeks the year 2 students have been participating in the 2017 Word Mania competition. In round 1, we were so amazed with our result, we finished the competition 1st on the leaderboard out of 4000 year 2 classes in the entire country!

In round 2, we finished 3rd nationally as well. However, in our region we have been ranking first throughout the entire competition. We are extremely proud of the efforts all our students have made throughout the competition and have noticed massive improvements in our writing.

Since we have been on an amazing streak while playing Word Mania, we had a special visitor from Literacy Planet and she gave us a special prize pack for all of our incredible efforts!

We are currently playing in the final round and it finishes at midnight tonight so all of us are encouraging our students to keep playing and making some incredible words.

Challenge: How many words can you make using these letters? What is the longest word you can make? What word can you make that will have the most points?

Comment all your words below, we cannot wait to see what you can all make!

Addition & Subtraction

Wow! What an amazing start to the term! All the grade twos have been busy exploring different curiosities and developing their knowledge.

This week and the coming weeks we are going to be looking at addition and subtraction. If you know of any awesome games that link to addition and subtraction please add a comment to our blog so we can play them in class as well.

One game that we know is really fun is Subtraction snap. Played with two players, each player gets half a deck of cards. At the same time each player flips a card over. The first person to figure out the difference between the two numbers collects the cards. The game is played until one player has no more cards left.

Let us know what you think of the game and we cannot wait to hear about and play all the games you have suggested too us!

Word Mania Challenge

Round 1 has started for Word Mania and there are heaps of prizes to be won. Already we are ranked in the top 10 nationally. Make sure you jump on have a go and try to beat your best score. Don’t forget to have fun and talk to your family about how this can improve our spelling by practising daily.

Spanish – Español

¡Hola! іBienvenidos a Español!

Hello! Welcome to Spanish!

It’s great to have Spanish again. So far, we’ve learned that Spanish is one of the three most spoken languages in the whole word.

We have also been curious about each other. What languages are spoken by our classmates?

We made tallies as a way to write down how many people spoke each language at home.

Then, we used the tallies to make a bar graph. Each square represents one person who speaks that language. The bar graphs can be found as a poster in our classroom. Come and be curious too!

We are very lucky to be at a school were students come from so many different language backgrounds. English, Punjabi, Arabic, Assyrian, Tamil… these and many other languages will help us learn Spanish, because our brains can make so many connections!

We will be learning lots of Spanish this term, and songs are a great way to do it. One website we use often with some great songs is: https://rockalingua.com/  Practising at home will build our confidence.

¡Chao! Bye!

Word Mania Achievements

WOW, after looking at all the statistics on Literacy Planet it was amazing to see all your efforts on Word Mania. Of all the schools in Melbourne’s North registered, the Year 2 cohort at ACPS are ranked in the top 5 for skills practise and participation practise.

On the NATIONAL LEADERBOARD we are ranked at number 15, moving us from below level 50 before the holidays started.

If you haven’t had a chance to get some practise in, please head over to Literacy Planet and have a try. All efforts help us progress and there are some amazing prizes to be won once the competition begins.

A BIG congratulations for what we have already achieved, I am super proud of our achievements! Keep up the wonderful work and enjoy the rest of your holidays.

SHARING OUR WONDERINGS

Over the holidays I have been questioned by my three and four year old with some AMAZING wonderings…

Why is a banana not straight?

Why am I taller than John but he’s older than me?

We all have questions and wonderings and we want to hear them!

Share the questions and wonderings that are happening in your household over the holidays and comment below.

I wonder… how many questions we can ask in the ACPS community?
