Welcome back to Term 3!

Welcome back to Term Three!

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday and now in preparation for the new term there are a few reminders to get us on our way.

Arriving at school and attendance:
It is essential that students are attending school every day and arriving to their classroom at 8:50am. Our classroom instruction commences at this time and if students come any later they miss out on important learning time and social interactions with their peers. Across the Year Two cohort we will be celebrating 100% attendance and punctuality when we achieve this within our rooms.

Lunch boxes:
We’ve loved seeing the amazing efforts going into packed lunchboxes. Just a friendly reminder that it is important your children have enough food for the school day, including lunch and snacks.

Writing Seeds:
It would be great to see children bringing in seeds/writing prompts on Monday from their holiday experiences. This will help remember the wonderful moments they’ve had over the holidays and stimulate ideas and creativity in writing.

iPad’s:
Please ensure that if your child has an iPad to bring in every day. It needs to be fully charged and have all required Apps downloaded and updated. This is really important as we will be using them on a daily basis as a learning tool throughout the term.

WORD MANIA UPDATE

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope you are all having an amazing holiday break! I had to share the AMAZING news after checking the current scores on Word Mania.

Even though we are still in the practise rounds we are absolutely shining and putting in our best efforts. Well done to everyone that has managed to log on and have a game during the holiday period.

Remember the more we practise the more experience and skill we will have when it comes to the first round of competition. Not only will it help us in the competition but it will also help us as learners with our spelling!

Below is an update on our position on the National and Regional Leaderboard!

Yes, you read that correctly! We are FIRST on the National Leaderboard and FIRST on the Regional Leaderboard!

You should all be super proud of your efforts and I am so excited to see what the competition holds for us.

Keep up the hard work and make sure you have a lot of fun playing Word Mania.

Enjoy the rest of your holidays!

** Comment below and tell us your high score or bonus point successes. Let’s all celebrate our wonderful efforts!**

Word Mania Update

Wow, what an amazing thing to see! This morning when I logged onto Literacy Planet to see our updated scores, I was so surprised. All of your efforts are really standing out and our score proves it.

Currently we are sitting in 35th position on the National Leaderboard and 2nd place in our local region.

Keep up the hard work! We will be checking on our scores in class to monitor our efforts. Keep playing and aim for those high scores.

Well done to everyone who has contributed so far!

WORD MANIA CHALLENGE 2018

Good Morning Year Two Community,

It is that time of year again, the WORD MANIA CHALLENGE is here! We would love to see all students and parents involved in the challenge. We need everyone to jump onto Word Mania and play as many times as you can to build up the highest possible scores. Last year our Year Two students achieved a tenth placing on the National Leaderboard and won some amazing prizes.
Together we can achieve great things, so let’s get playing!

Accessing Word Mania:
Word Mania is accessible on desktop and mobile devices. Simply log in to LiteracyPlanet on desktop and click on the Word Mania icon, or can download the free Word Mania 2018 app (iOS and Android). Students use their LiteracyPlanet login details for Word Mania.

How to Play
Word Mania is an interactive online word building game. Players are given a board of 15 randomly generated letters, and have three minutes to create as many words as they can. Every valid word formed earns points. Longer and more complex words score higher, and scores can be boosted by building valid words consecutively, and using special Gold and Diamond letter tiles. Word building uses various literacy skills: phonemes, morphemes including affixes and plurals, spelling, word recognition, vocabulary and word knowledge. Students can play as many times as they like, and the sum of the highest 50 game scores by at least five students from the same grade will be their school’s score for that year level.

$350,000 in Prizes!

Word Mania Dates:
Practise – Thursday, May 17 – Sunday, July 29.
Competition Round 1- Monday, July 30 to Friday, August 3.
Competition Round 2 – Monday, August 6 to Friday, August 10.
Final Round – Wednesday, August 15 to Friday, August 17.

Home Learning

Dear parents and carers,

Here is some information about Year Two Home Learning. Please see the attached document for specific tasks to complete.

Year Two Home Learning.docx-19urtj6

Homework tasks to incorporate

  • An optional grid with a set of open ended activities relating to unit of study/life skills or research
  • Can involve Manga High/Literacy Planet as part of the grid for additional practice and challenge
  • Personal spelling words that come from student writing (If students are competent spellers then the focus is on extending vocabulary)
  • Number fluency activities around automatic response and real life experiences e.g. shopping. (not excessive, to fit in line with policy)
  • Reading to your child, with your child and/or children reading by themselves take home, library and any other relevant reading material

Implementation

  • No consequences (detention) for students not completing the homework.
  • Communication with parents required if expected tasks (reading, number fluency and spelling) are not completed.
  • Communication with parents should focus on the reasons why homework is not completed and the reasons for the importance of this practice to support child’s learning.
  • Homework needs to be acknowledged (corrected) and not take up a lot of time to correct.

Kind Regards,

Year Two Teachers

This week in 2G…

This week in 2G we have been focusing on reading, comparing, ordering and renaming 4-digit numbers. We have enjoyed practising these skills while playing mathematical games like Mastermind, Race to the Moon and Rhino Race.

We have also been learning about community in class. We have learnt about different jobs within our community and the different types of communities including rural, suburban and urban communities. We have also been looking at our family communities and created our own family trees.

Year 2 Communications

Thank you to all parents, guardians and students for such a wonderful transition into Year 2, 2018. We really appreciate all the support and interactions that we have already had in regards to learning experiences within the classrooms.

We highly encourage all family members to be involved in your child’s learning throughout the year. To do this we have a range of communication methods that you can access for each class. Our wonderful and enthusiastic students will contributing to these with their work, feedback and photos displaying the learning they have been involved in. We would love if you could access these and look through them as a family to discuss the learning experiences. Class teachers and specialist teachers update these regularly.

Perspective drawing- environments

In 2G we have been very busy this term learning about one point perspective drawing. We created perspective landscape drawings using coloured pencils and learnt about using vanishing points in our drawings. We think that our skills have improved heaps using this technique and we hope to explore more perspective drawing skills in the future. What do you think of our environments?
